Bottom The Weaver - Worksheet

3. Some critics see Bottom as a fool. Others think he is wiser than he appears. Based on your findings in the above activities and reading the play, what is your opinion of Bottom? (How would you describe him to someone?) Use quotes from the play to support your opinion.

Answer:
I find that Bottom is not clever but he wants to be thought of as clever. He tries too hard to seem clever and funny that he messes up simple words and sayings and ends up making himself sound even dumber than he would be normally.

BOTTOM Thisby, the flowers of odious savours sweet,--
QUINCE Odours, odours.

As you see in that quote from the book he messes up a simple word that should not have been messed up or changed. I don't understand how he is clever. I mean if you find that someone screwing up simple english words to be clever then by all means he's clever but from what I know, that is not close to clever.

4. Puck can transform Bottom into anything he pleases. Why did Puck choose a donkey?

Answer:
I think it is because a donkey resembles the personality and lack of cleverness in Bottom. Also, donkeys are not attractive or friendly as well.  Also it was so that Titania would fall in love with him.
